Greeks speak Greek, you can absolutely get by on just English. English is widely spoken by those in the hospitality industry and heavily touristed areas, and since it’s part of the standard school curriculum, you’ll find that a majority of people under 40 speak it with varying proficiency.

When planning meal times and restaurant reservations, keep in mind that Greeks eat late. For lunch, this means 2 pm at the earliest; for dinner, crowds start trickling in after 9 pm (and even later once the heat dies down in summer months).

Cash is king in Greece! While most shops and hotels accept credit cards, many smaller businesses and restaurants do not. ATMs are available in airports and cities, but smaller towns and villages may only have one or even no ATMs available. It is best to have a decent amount of cash for small purchases or emergencies. 

The best time to visit Greece and the Greek Islands is autumn, September to mid-October, or spring and early summer, mid-April to mid-June. This way, you’ll avoid the tourist-packed high season and the summer heat. Heatwaves of 40 °C (100 °F) are common in August.
